Between Two Wars

All Bible verses are taken from the New King James Version, if not otherwise mentioned
Introduction

War never ends with war
It is a continuous process
All wars continue until the enemy is totally destroyed to the point that he will never come back.
A War ends only by the total destruction of the enemy

This is an eternal and universal truth.
Nothing has changed this principle so far.

So our ancients also knew this principle about war
And hence they tried to annihilate the enemy during the war.

Run the race of faith

1corinthians 9.24 – 27
24 Do you not know that those who run in the stadium all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.
25 And everyone who competes exercises self-control in all things. Thus those do so in order that they may receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one.
26 Therefore I run in this way, not as running aimlessly; I box in this way, not as beating the air.
27 But I discipline my body and subjugate it, lest somehow after preaching to others, I myself should become disqualified.

2 Timothy 2 . 5  And also if anyone competes he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.

Introduction

Paul used the image of running race – the marathon.
Marathon is a race running for more than 42 Kms or more than 26 miles.
The image is from Greek culture

Paul is encouraging the believers to strive to reach a goal

Fear Not

Fear is the strongest emotion of 21 century.

What is fear?

Fear is an apprehension of sufferings and losses
Fear is an emotion over something unpleasant which may occur in future.

Suffering of pain – hunger, sickness, torture, dishonor etc.
Loss of - property, income, time, health, honour, power, life itself etc.

Fear is caused by the existence of another personality/power that is against our life.
It may be:

Evil people
Evil supernatural powers

It may have its base in our past life or the life of other people.

The cause of fear is always an unexpected or unwelcome incident.
So whether it may happen or not, we tend to fear.

Joshua Generation Part II

CHAPTER   III

THE OTHER FAITH
  1. Introduction
 1.  Faith has different levels

1.  I believe – simply saying that one has faith without any deep conviction – born again and baptized, so I am called a believer
2.  I believe because you believe – declare faith in God and his wonderful ways with every one who believes – no personal conviction – pastor believes, so I believe
3.  I firmly believe – have personal conviction – applied to personal or family life only
4.  Challenging faith – Elijah’s faith on Mt. Carmel – challenging to prove that our God is the only true God – my faith is true faith

2.  People with Moses and those with Joshua showed different levels of Faith

Joshua Generation Part I

I.       INTRODUCTION – THE BOOK OF JOSHUA

1.   Book of Joshua is a book of Victory
2.  Victory of True Worship of the Living God over false idolatry worship of Canaanites
3.  It is the story of Joshua – his transformation and growth from the Servant of Moses to the Servant of God
4.  It tells how God was with Joshua as He had been with Moses

II.     Lessons Joshua Learnt from Moses

1.  Follow Moses daily
2.  He understood Moses leadership style
3.  Moses received his anointing by spending time with God, (Joshua would linger in the presence to receive his own anointing).
4.  He watched the plagues, witnessed the miracles
5.  He watched Moses return with the tablets.  One thing for sure, Joshua would have never wished the death of Moses.
6.  Never dare to use the death of Moses as a tool for a smooth transition of authority – He waited till God appointed him.

Jesus the Victor

Mark 4: 11   He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables.”

Christian life is a triumphant life

Colossians 2:13 - 23
13  When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,
14   having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.
15   And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

Authority over the physical world

Authority over the Physical World

I.       Introduction

1.   We have authority over the physical world.
2.   God is a spirit being
3.   Satan is a spirit being
4.   Demons and angels are spirit beings
5.   Their station is the spiritual realms
6.   So we always think of spiritual authority over all these spirit beings
7.   But we have authority over physical world also

II.    Adam and Eve were given physical authority over the newly created earth and all on it.
Genesis 1:28 – “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” {moveth: Heb. creepeth}

III. But Adam lost the authority when he hesitated to exercise his authority and obeyed the serpent.

1.   Your master is whom you obey
2.   The one who gives orders is the master

Genesis 3:6 - And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. {pleasant: Heb. a desire}

Adam Clarke’s Commentary

All natural and moral evil sprang from three sources:
1.      The desire of the flesh - the tree was good for food. (Exactly what the apostle calls)
2.      The desire of the eye - it was pleasant to the sight
3.      The pride of life - it was a tree to be desired to make one wise.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown commentary

The history of every temptation, and of every sin, is the same:
1.      The outward object of attraction
2.      The inward commotion of mind
3.      The increase and triumph of passionate desire
4.      Ending in the degradation, slavery, and ruin of the soul (Jas 1:15; 1Jo 2:16).

1 John 2:16 - For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

IV.    In the Old Testament period few, designated by God used this authority over physical world.

1.   Joshua was one among the few.
2.   Israelites had war against five kings of the Amorites gathered together against Gibeonites.
3.   Joshua and his people could not finish the war before the sun set – they need more time
4.   If the enemy get the advantage of the night, they may hid or gather their strength again and fight in the morning.
5.   So Joshua wanted to extend the day time.
6.   It is said that he ordered the sun and the moon to stand still – they stood still.
7.   Joshua was using his authority over physical objects.

Joshua 10:12, 13
12- Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. {stand...: Heb. be silent}
13- And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

Note:
i.           According to the present accredited system of the universe, called sometimes the Pythagorean, Copernican, or Newtonian system, The Sun is in the centre of what is called the solar system.
ii.         The earth and all the other planets, whether primary or secondary, move round the sun in certain periodical times.
iii.       The sun has no revolution round any orbit, but to revolve round his own axis -  It is at rest in the system.
iv.       The earth, not only revolves round the sun in 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 48 seconds, but also revolves round its own axis.
v.         The sun makes this revolution in 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds.
vi.       In the course of 24 hours complete, every part of its surface is alternately turned to the sun.
vii.     This revolution constitutes our day and night - the former does our year.
viii.   It is day to all those parts which have the sun above the horizon, and night to those which have the sun below it.
ix.       This diurnal revolution of the earth, or revolving round its own axis, in a direction from west to east, occasions what is commonly called the rising and setting of the sun - not by any motion in the sun himself, but by this motion of the earth.

x.         So if Joshua needed more time, to delay the setting of the sun, he should have commanded to the earth to stop revolving.
xi.       Joshua here says what he needs not the means to achieve it - God will find a way
xii.     God asked the earth to stop revolving upon its axis and thus extends the day.

V.    Jesus used His authority over all physical objects in this world.

1.   Jesus started using His authority by defeating Satan’s temptations and ordering his to leave His at once.
2.   This is the secret of authority.
3.   We have to start with defeating Satan and sin.
4.   Jesus defeated Satan in the desert – where He was alone with Satan, away from His parents, John the Baptist who baptized Him and His disciples (they were yet to be selected)
5.   Jesus started His ministry not by the miracle at Cana, but by the triumph over the enemy.
6.   The defeat of Satan was not complete there – but it started in the desert.
7.   The fight goes on till His death.
8.   Jesus declared the final victory on the cross.
9.   Jesus took back the authority lost to Adam (man) at the desert from Satan. – Never again Satan could use the authority.

VI. Jesus and His authority over the physical world.

1.      Jesus started using His authority by performing his first miracle at Cana – He changed water into wine – He made it clear that water has to obey him.
2.      Later during His ministry He gathered fish for poor fishermen – rebuked the violent sea etc.
3.      He even taught His disciples and all those who believe in Him that even topographical changes can be made by a word of faith from them.

Matthew 17:20 - And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Matthew 21:21 - Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.

V.  Jesus and His authority

Matthew 28:18 - 20
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: {teach...: or, make disciples, or, Christians of all nations}
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Authority is responsibility

Authority is Responsibility

I.      Introduction
Boundaries are Real

1.      Boundaries were set first by God

Genesis 2:8 - And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.

Exodus 23:31- And I will set thy bounds from the Red sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee.

II.   Tangible and Intangible Boundaries

1.      Physical boundary of a land is visible
2.      Boundaries of worldly authority of a person is unseen

i.        An officer in an office has authority
ii.      His authority has a boundary around his office – not beyond that
iii.    Our State Chief minister has an authority – within the State only

3.      Spiritual boundary is also unseen

4.      Boundary shows (visible)

i.        What is your possession
ii.      What is not your possession
iii.    Limit of your freedom
iv.    The extend you can go and the limit you should not cross

III.           Boundary is Authority

1.      Boundary defines your authority

i.        You have authority over all things that comes within your boundary
ii.      You have no authority over anything that is beyond your boundary
iii.    You have authority is important
iv.    You should exercise your authority
v.      Or somebody else start to manipulate things
vi.    Even when someone manipulates things the responsibility will be yours.

2.      Spiritual authorities are also unseen

Luke 9:1 - Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.

IV.           Authority is Responsibility

i.        You are entrusted with an area of authority by God with a purpose

Genesis 2: 15 - And the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep <shamar> it.

<shamar> a primitive root; properly, to hedge about (as with thorns), i.e. guard; generally, to protect, attend to, etc.:--beward, be circumspect, take heed (to self), keep(-er, self), mark, look narrowly, observe, preserve, regard, reserve, save (self), sure, (that lay) wait (for), watch(-man).

ii.      Authority is for use
iii.    Authority is the responsibility to keep everything run in the proper way
iv.    Authority is responsibility to keep away anything that disturbs the smooth run
v.      It is to safe guard the boundaries
vi.    We are responsible to keep away the enemy

Deuteronomy 4:38 - To drive out nations from before thee greater and mightier than thou art, to bring thee in, to give thee their land for an inheritance, as it is this day.

Deuteronomy 9:5 - Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

V.   In an Area of Polluted Authority

1.      Authority is Responsibility
2.      To drive away everything that pollutes the area

Numbers 33:52 - Then ye shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their pictures, and destroy all their molten images, and quite pluck down all their high places:

VI.           If You Do Not Take the Responsibility to Drive Away the Enemies?

Numbers 33:55 - But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.

Joshua 23: 11 - 16
11 Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God. {yourselves: Heb. your souls}
12 Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:
13 Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
14 And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.
15 Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
16 When ye have transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.

VII.        Conclusion

1.      Take back the authority
2.      Be Responsible.
